Anemia is a lower than normal amount of healthy red blood cells (RBCs). The hemoglobin in RBCs pick up oxygen from the lungs and carries it to cells all over the body. The body cannot work as it should when it does not have enough healthy RBCs.
Nutritional anemia is when a person does not have enough iron, folic acid, or vitamin B12 to make RBCs.
