Cynthia M. Johnson, MA DefinitionBinge eating disorder is when a person has repeat episodes of eating large amounts of food in a short period of time. The person does not feel like they have control over the behavior. CausesThe cause is not known. It may be linked to problems with how the brain works. Genes may also be involved.
Risk FactorsThis problem is more common in women. Other things that may raise the risk are:
SymptomsThe main symptom is eating large amounts of food over a short period of time. DiagnosisThe doctor will ask about your symptoms and health history. You will be asked about your eating habits. A physical exam will be done. This is often enough to make the diagnosis. TreatmentThe goal of treatment is to end problem behaviors and return to and stay at a healthy weight. Choices are:
