Reducing Your Risk of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD)

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is caused by atherosclerosis, which is a progressive condition. The same lifestyle changes used to manage PAD are also effective tools to prevent it. The following practices may help prevent peripheral artery disease:

  • Quitting smoking
  • Eating a healthier diet
  • Controlling conditions that put you at risk for PAD, such as:
    • High blood pressure
    • Diabetes
    • Blood fat disorders
    • Obesity
  • Exercising regularly —Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any type of exercise.
